Around the same time as the American colonists on the east coast were gearing up for war with Britain, the Spanish, who were well established in South America, began moving up the coast on the west. Juan Bautista de Anza, an officer in the Spanish army, was charged with finding an overland route from roughly today’s Arizona to central California. That was the expedition that mapped out present-day San Francisco.

On this day, March 28, in 1776, de Anza’s expedition came to the site of their settlement on the west coast. De Anza located the site of the church that would serve as the mission’s administrative center, and the Presidio of San Francisco, which was a small fort before it became a park.

While de Anza established the sites for the mission and presidio, he did not actually establish the settlement himself: that was outside the scope of his mission. He returned back to Spanish land and was handsomely rewarded. Meanwhile another Spanish explorer, José Joaquín Moraga, built up the site of the Presidio, and established for its support the farming village El Pueblo de San José de Guadalupe, better known today as San Jose.

Redding’s Record Searchlight Paper talks about how...

Redding’s Record Searchlight Paper talks about how excellent the hiking is at the Presidio - which is a fairly nice compliment considering how amazing the hiking is up there!

Wednesday October 31, 2012 will be a very busy day for traffic as there are many events taking place.

* San Francisco Giants Parade – 11AM-1PM – Embarcadero to Civic Center via Market Street

* Halloween Festivities in Sausalito – 4:30PM-6:30PM – Most of the activities will be taking place on Caledonia Street.

* Many bars and restaurants in and around the San Francisco Bay Area will be extremely busy all day and evening with Giants and Halloween festivities which will add to traffic and pedestrian congestion.

* Public Transportation will be at maximum levels too.

* Allow extra time for commuting to and from work.

* Law Enforcement in many areas will be at maximum staffing and DUI enforcement as well.

*Expect delays in both directions across the Golden Gate Bridge.*

For those driving into San Francisco, via the Golden Gate Bridge, the bridge will remain four (4) lanes SOUTH into San Francisco through 9:30 am, the time at which the Bridge is normally changed to three (3) lanes southbound and three (3) lanes northbound. Beginning at approximately 4 pm, the lane configuration will be changed to four (4) northbound and two (2) southbound.

The Bay Bridge and San Rafael Bridge will also experience increased traffic levels throughout the day, as well as Highway 101 and Sir Francis Drake Boulevard too.

Please travel safe and use safety precautions during this busy day and evening.

* Do not leave valuables or items in plain sight within your vehicle.

* Remember the iPhone is the number one stolen item in San Francisco and many times its taken by force or fear, so keep your iPhone and other valuables safe and be aware of your surroundings at all times. If using your phone step out of the main stream and make your call in a safe and controlled environment.

Recent Acquisitions: 1936 Scrapbook of a Mickey Mouse Inker at...

Recent Acquisitions: 1936 Scrapbook of a Mickey Mouse Inker at Walt Disney Family Museum

http://kalw.org/post/evolution-presidio

The Presidio, where the Golden Gate Bridge meets San Francisco, combines beautiful nature with rich historical heritage. The 1,500 acres are part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, and are managed by the Presidio Trust which was established by Congress in 1996 when the US Army left the space.

Visitors can explore many hiking trails, campsite and play at the golf course. They can also visit restaurants and cafes, and even a spa. Approximately 8,000 people live, work, or attend school at the Presidio.

But the way the Presidio is choosing to manage the park is creating controversy. Development of the historic property has sparked debate over what the sprawling space should look like and how it can remain financially sustainable.

Biking in the Presidio by 2composers on Flickr.Beautiful! If this...

The Walt Disney Family Museum’s Halloweentown!

If this video is any indication, it should be fun: http://www.waltdisney.com/content/haunting-rumors)

This Friday, we’re getting an early start on Halloween festivities here at The Walt Disney Family Museum, with special screenings of Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas, as well as a spooky-themed Animate Your Night: Halloweentown!

Don your best costume and see our special exhibition Between Frames: The Magic Behind Stop Motion Animation, celebrating creepy characters such as Jack Skellington, Coraline, and Robot Chicken. Don’t miss out on fun activities, tantalizing bites from Presidio restaurant Dixie, and a chillingly delightful cocktail—the Jack Skellington and Coke!

Animate Your Night is for guests ages 18 and over, but here’s an activity in which anyone can participate… pumpkin carving!

WDFM staffers and volunteers prepped these patterns/stencils for your pumpkin-carving pleasure. Print, carve, photograph, and send your pumpkins over to storyboard@wdfmuseum.org when you’re done! We’ll be posting our favorites on Storyboard at the end of the month. (Click on the images to enlarge).
